Rwanda Photo Safaris

Rwanda is a small and picturesque landlocked country located in the Great Lakes region of East Africa for perfect Rwanda photo safari. It is in the heart of Africa and is an excellent location for photo safaris. Despite being dwarfed by its neighbours Uganda, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, “The Land of a Thousand Hills” is biodiverse due to its various varied biomes. Dive deep into Rwanda’s amazing places of remarkable natural beauty, where you will have unusual and intimate interactions with wildlife and great moments of taking incredible photographs with the help of an experienced safari guide.

Finding your subjects, mainly the wildlife, is the first step in producing a magnificent Rwanda Photographic Safari. A Rwanda photo safari will take you to the best spots in Volcanoes National Park to picture the peaceful mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, chimpanzees and various monkeys in Nyungwe Forest Park, the big five and other wildlife on the savannah plains of Akagera National Park, and colourful wildlife and a serene aquatic biome at Lake Kivu, among other fine destinations in the country.

What to Expect on a Rwanda Photo Safari

The land of a thousand hills may be small, but it is brimming with all the beauty of the environment, culture, people, and a diversity of species. Although the country’s picturesque splendour is likely to be fantastic for photography, some locations are more popular with photographers than others.

Rwanda offers a wide range of wildlife and picturesque options for photographers: the Volcanoes National Park’s Mountain gorillas are a beautiful and most popular laid-back photographic subject, and the speeds attained by contemporary cameras mean you’d have to be very unlucky not to come back with some awesome shots, even in dismal weather.

The more restless golden monkeys are harder to photograph because of the quick movements as they forage bamboos to feed on. And yet you will still have opportunities to photograph when they rest to feed briefly after picking a bamboo shoot.

The chimpanzees of Nyungwe National Park are less cooperative photographic subjects; however, the Colobus monkeys of the same national park are often quite easy to photograph.

The African Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) as well as all other mammal grazers like giraffe, zebra, hippo, and other antelope, as well as a variety of birdlife, can be photographed in Akagera National Park.

Rwanda is also known as a birdwatcher’s paradise, with 703 documented species, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics, diverse habitats, and some of Africa’s best mountain birding. The Virunga’s exquisite volcanic outlines, on the other hand, especially at twilight and dawn, are extremely photogenic: And so are lakes like Kivu and Burera.

If you wish to photograph people in Rwanda, you must first obtain permission.

Photography Equipment for a Rwanda Photo Safari

Wildlife photography necessitates quicker lenses with larger magnifications than most other subjects. A 70-200mm or equivalent lens should be enough for gorillas, potentially augmented by a 28-70mm or similar for wider-angle shots. A zoom lens that goes up to 300 is ideal elsewhere, potentially supplemented by a fixed 400 or 500 lens with the fastest f-stop of 4 or better than 2.8.

A tripod can help you stabilize your camera for picturesque shots. If you visit Akagera, bring a beanbag to rest your lens on to reduce the chance of camera shake; to save weight, bring it empty to Rwanda and fill it up with rice, beans, or something similar once you arrive.

Best time to visit Rwanda

The best time to visit Rwanda is between June and September, when the weather is dry and you have the highest opportunity of seeing the country’s undisputed highlight: the endangered mountain gorillas. The rainy seasons, from March to May and again in November on the other hand, are ideal for golden monkey trekking. It’s also quieter at that time.

Because Rwanda is located just south of the Equator, temperatures rarely fluctuate throughout the year. The days are warm, with temperatures ranging from the late teens to the mid-twenties depending on where you go in the country. The nights can be chilly, especially at higher elevations.
