This 6 Days Rwanda Primates Safari takes you to two prim national parks in Rwanda. Experience the scenery, nature and primates of Rwanda. Start with Nyungwe forest for chimpanzee trekking, colobus monkey trekking and canopy walk. The Rwanda primates safari continues to Volcanoes national park which is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Day 1: Welcome to Rwanda – Rwanda Primates Safari
Arrive inKigali today for your Rwanda Primates Safari. Depending on time of your flight, Our guide will be at the airport to pick you. Otherwise, the hotel will pick you. You will be transferred to the hotel for check in and overnight.
Day 2: Nyungwe National Park – Ethnographic Museum
Take the long drive to Nyungwe forest in southern Rwanda. Depending on your interest, you can visit the Gatagara pottery experience. Alternatively, you can choose the ethnographic museum of Rwanda. Learn about the culture and history of the Rwandan people from a Rwandan guide.
After this experience, proceed to your lodge for check in and overnight.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe forest – Rwanda Primates Safari
Continue on the Rwanda primates safari after an early breakfast. Transfer to Nyungwe forest for Chimpanzee trekking after briefing from the guide. Nyungwe forest is rich in botanical diversity. Some of the primates in Nyungwe are; Chimpanzees, L’Hoest monkeys, Columbus monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys etc. The park is also home to about 300 bird species and several butterflies.
Your community guide will lead you into the forest for chimp trekking after a short briefing. The time you spend in the forest depends on the location of the chimpanzees.
Incase you did not take the canopy walk tester, take it today. It lasts approximately 2 hours after which you return to your hotel.
Day 4: Colobus Monkey Trekking and Transfer to Volcanoes National park
This morning again we leave for the briefing point at Nyungwe forest. After briefing, the ranger guide will lead you into the forest for the Colobus monkey trekking.
Look forward to watching the monkeys groom, feed and play with one another. You are allowed 1 hour in their presence before you start the trek back.
Start the scenic drive to Volcanoes national park. Have a stopover visit at the former Imbabazi orphanage and learn about the transformation work.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking and Gorilla Guardians Village – Rwanda Primates Safari
Start the gorilla trek with a briefing from the ranger guide at the park headquarters. After the brief, join a gorilla group with guidance from your tour guide. Drive to the trail head after briefing to start your trek into the forest. After one hour with the gorillas, you start your hike out of the park. Your driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to the lodge for down time.
In the afternoon, visit the Gorilla Guardians village. Learn about the culture and history of Rwanda. Try out your bow and arrow shooting skills or basketry etc.
Day 6: Golden Monkey trekking and Departure
Golden monkeys are found in the Virunga volcanoes of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. After a brief from the ranger guide, you will start your hike up in search of the golden monkeys. Enforcement officers join you to help in case you meet buffaloes which can be dangerous.
The golden monkeys are more active than the gorillas and you will follow them as they move to feed. Like gorilla trekking, you are only allowed 1 hour with the golden monkey.
Depending on your flight time, you can visit the Umusambi village for a bird walk. Explore more of the city until your transfer time to the airport.
